Social Finance  ·  A Vision for What's Next

For 250 years, America ran on two wallets.
Social Finance opened a third.

Most money in your wallet gets spent only once. A government program funds activity, not outcomes. A foundation dollar sits in a donor-advised fund, given away but never put to work. A worker takes on debt, and repayment is forced before they're able. A proven model never leaves the city where it works.

Social Finance had different questions.

What if the dollar that trained one worker came back to train the next? What if the government only paid for programs that actually worked? What if a foundation's gift were compounded like an investment? What if every lesson Social Finance learned went back to invest in the whole field?

That's the Third Wallet in action. A different way of seeing every resource you have — and making it work harder for the people capital was never designed to reach.

Invested, and comes back.

The Third Wallet in action — across every unit, every model, every dollar.

Workforce & Education

A worker succeeds. Repays. Funds the next.

Invested, and comes back.

Public Sector Solutions

Outcomes replace activity. What works travels to the next jurisdiction.

Invested, and comes back.

Impact-First Investments

Dormant capital activates, achieves impact, returns.

Invested, and comes back.

Four Ways the Third Wallet Works

Workforce & Education Investments

A worker is one credential away from a career that changes everything. The only barrier is financing.

Social Finance builds the models that remove that barrier — where learners access real training, land real jobs, and only repay when they're earning enough to do so.

The dollar helps one person. Then comes back to help the next.

Public Sector Solutions

Governments across America spend billions. Most have trouble telling you if the program worked.

Social Finance builds government partnerships where public dollars follow outcomes, not activity. We work in the spaces between agencies, between jurisdictions, between what government funding is supposed to do and what it actually accomplishes.

When it works, it gets redeployed. Invested, and comes back.

Impact-First Investments

More than $2 trillion sits in foundations and donor-advised funds across America. Set aside for good. Not yet put to work.

Social Finance activates that capital — directing it toward high-impact investments that achieve their purpose and return. Philanthropy that compounds instead of disappears. The most sophisticated philanthropists in America aren't just donors here. They're partners who came in carefully, watched what worked, and went further than they imagined.

Giving that gives again.

The Social Finance Institute

Every model Social Finance builds generates knowledge. Most organizations keep that knowledge inside the building.

The Social Finance Institute puts it back into the field — translating what works into research, tools, and convenings that help practitioners, policymakers, and investors build better.

Not just at Social Finance. Everywhere.

The Third Wallet, In Real Lives

MacKenzie

MacKenzie quit his job and enrolled full-time in a radiography program. Rent. Transportation. Utilities. All of it still due. A zero-interest Pay It Forward loan covered tuition, living expenses, and emergency aid. He expects to earn between $56 and $71 an hour once he lands a job. When he repays, that money funds the next person.

"I know that the repayment I'm making isn't going into someone's bank account — it's going to fund another person with the same career path or goals. That's really awesome."

Katie

Katie had worked at Vinfen for over a decade. She always wanted to be a nurse. The barrier wasn't ambition — it was time and money. The MA Career Ladder Program let her reduce her hours, keep her paycheck, and enroll in an LPN program without leaving her company.

"This program makes it possible to move up without leaving the company. That's huge."

Asia

Asia knew exactly what the Pay It Forward loan meant — not just for her, but for whoever comes next.

"It was very clear that repayments go back into the fund to support future students. It feels good knowing that when I repay my loan, I'm helping someone else get the same opportunity."

Three people. Three different paths. One Third Wallet.

The First 360 Days

Here is how I would approach the first 360 days. With one important caveat. Normally, this work begins with 90 days of deep listening — meeting every unit, every leader, every city, before a single external word is written. That phase is already complete.

Days 1–30

Build on what exists.

Since March, I've been on a mission to better understand Social Finance. Through research, reading op-eds and white papers, and 21 conversations across every unit and level of the organization, what would normally take 90 days is largely complete. What is most critical is the existing research and surveys that, several people have told me, already exist for Social Finance. What that may unlock could change some of the direction — but based on my findings and work to date, this foundation can make July 6 possible.

Day 49

July 6.

Tracy's op-ed in the New York Times. The machine moves. Every channel. Every partner. The board is activated. The story that opens 500 doors — simultaneously, not sequentially.

Days 50–360

Build from proof.

This is where the real work begins. Not launching and hoping. Measuring and adjusting — the same way Social Finance holds its business units accountable for outcomes.

What stories are landing and where? Which journalists are calling back? What is the IFI Tool launch teaching us about how the market receives this work? What does the data say about who is finding us and why?

Communications at Social Finance shouldn't operate on gut feel. It should operate on proof — the same proof Social Finance demands of every program it funds. And the founding story is the communications story. 8 people to 120. One office to five. Every state in the country. That scale hasn't been told at the scale it deserves.

The Moment Is Now.

By day 360, we will know exactly what it takes to keep building — and what year two must look like to ensure Social Finance leads the national conversation about impact-first investing.

The Third Wallet is the foundation. What has always been missing is the narrative architecture that makes every conversation — every pitch, every press moment, every room — draw from the same well.

15 years of proof. A new way for capital to find the people it was never designed to reach.

Let's Build That Architecture Together
